Frequently asked questions

Can a dietitian help with gestational diabetes?

Yes. A Registered Dietitian can help you understand how food affects your blood sugar and build a personalized eating plan for pregnancy. Support may include carbohydrate portions and timing, balanced meals and snacks, protein and fibre, blood sugar patterns and meeting your overall pregnancy nutrition needs.

What should I eat if I have gestational diabetes?

There is no single gestational diabetes diet that works for everyone. Meals often include a balance of higher-fibre carbohydrate foods, protein, vegetables and healthy fats, with carbohydrates spread throughout the day rather than eaten in large amounts at once. A dietitian can help determine the amounts and meal pattern that work for your blood sugar and pregnancy needs.

Do I need to avoid carbohydrates with gestational diabetes?

No. Carbohydrates provide important energy and nutrients during pregnancy and usually do not need to be eliminated. The type, amount and timing of carbohydrate matter, and pairing carbohydrate foods with protein and fibre can help support more stable blood sugar.

Can gestational diabetes be managed with diet?

Many people are able to improve their blood sugar with nutrition changes, physical activity and regular monitoring. However, some people will still need insulin or other treatment during pregnancy, even when they are eating well, so medication decisions should be made with the healthcare team managing the pregnancy.
